- Aruns (Tarquinius)
Aruns was the brother of
Tarquinius Superbus , the last king of Rome, according toTacitus .During battle, he saw
Lucius Junius Brutus , who had led the overthrow of Tarquinius and founded theRoman Republic , at the head of the Roman army, wearing the royal robes which he considered belonged to his house alone. He and Brutus fought and killed each other.A character named Aruns also appears in Dante's Inferno (XX.46-48); however, this Aruns was an invented character of the poet Lucan based on these passages in Livy. According to Lucan's Pharsalia [http://books.google.com/books?id=13JzT7zAN3MC&pg=PA119&lpg=PA119&dq=aruns+lucan&source=web&ots=NQRaPwCmHz&sig=Cgrx3el57mRo3Yf4u-YDmaihXLc&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result (I.584-588)] , this Aruns was an Etruscan seer who foretold that Julius Caesar would win the Roman Civil War.
