Tasmanian state election, 1959

Tasmanian state election, 1959

Distribution of Seats

Aftermath

The Australian Labor Party won the most seats in the newly-expanded House of Assembly, but not enough to govern in a majority as two seats were won by Independents. The 1959 election was the last occasion in which an ungrouped independent (William Wedd) won a seat in Tasmania. [Green, Antony: [http://blogs.abc.net.au/antonygreen/2008/03/independents-to.html Independents to be disadvantaged by ACT electoral changes] , Australian Broadcasting Corporation, May 28 2008.]

The Communist Party of Australia ran a candidate in Denison, but they only received a minuscule 414 votes. The Democratic Labor Party (DLP) also ran candidates in Braddon, Denison and Franklin, but failed to gain a seat, garnering 6,299 votes.
