Alaturbi

Alaturbi

Alaturbi is a festival celebrated in Akcaabat and Besikdüzü (west of Trabzon) on 29 June - 6 July with the participation of Cephni Turkomans in honour of the sea.

It is celebrated on 20 May (in Hegirian calendar 7 May) from Samsun to Rize Pazar along the Anatolian Pontic coast by native peoples and called Litropi (< Greek Litro “Bath” + Poli “city”) in Mahno in Sürmene (east of Trabzon).

People who have pain, ache or epilepsy swim on that day to recover. People who can swim, do so in the sea. Others carry water from the sea and have a bath. At the same time it is very useful to travel between three seven river mouths in a boat. Because women and the people from mountains do not know how to swim there are many drownings. In Giresun, people go to Arethian Island and pray to the God (in ancient times there was an Ares shrine this island people to worship).
