Professor Colm Kearney is a professor of international business at Trinity College, Dublin.

Background
Born and raised in North County Dublin, Kearney attended University College Dublin (UCD), where he graduated with a BA in Economics and Politics. Kearney went on to complete Masters degrees in Economics from UCD, the University of Essex, and The University of Western Ontario. In 1985 he completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Marcus Miller at the University of Warwick. His doctoral thesis was entitled “Monetary Policy and Asset Prices”.
Academic Career and Interests
Kearney’s lecturing career began at the University of Essex in the late 1970s, after which he worked as a research associate in the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick while completing his doctoral research. He served as Lecturer in Monetary Economics at Loughborough University before joining the Economics Department at the University of New South Wales, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 1988. Kearney held his first Professorial Chair in 1990 in the Department of Economics and Finance at University of Western Sydney. After serving as an economic advisor to the Australian government he took up the position of Professor of Finance and Economics at the University of Technology, Sydney, and continued with his research supported by a number of Australian Research Council awards. Kearney returned to Ireland in 1998 as a Research Professor of Economics at the Economic and Social Research Institute, and in 1999 he moved to Dublin City University to become Professor of Finance.
Since 2001, Kearney has served as Professor of International Business at Trinity College. He was elected Dean of the Faculty of Business Economic and Social Studies in 2004. In 2005, Kearney was appointed by the Provost to serve as Senior Lecturer (now Chief Academic Officer) of the College. In this role, Kearney had direct responsibility for implementing restructuring policies for the university, which were agreed by Council and Board in July 2008. A significant achievement in this role, Kearney gained College-wide agreement to synchronise Trinity College Dublin's academic semesters and programme offerings in line with the Bologna system of modularisation.
Personal
Kearney has broad policy and consulting experience, serving as Senior Economic Advisor to Australian Federal Treasurer (Ministers for Finance) John Kerin and Federal Finance Minister Ralph Willis in the early 1990s. His role involved attending Cabinet meetings and parliamentary sessions, advising the Treasurer as well as other cabinet ministers on all aspects of macroeconomic and financial policy.
Since returning to Ireland in 1998 he has also engaged in economic consultancy for a variety of commercial and state organizations. A keen runner, Colm has competed a number of marathons and other sporting events, often in aid of Trinity Takes to the Streets, a TCD based charity.
Kearney is married to Elaine Hutson, who lectures in Finance at University College Dublin. He has two children, Conor and Kara, both university students.
Research
Kearney is an academic teacher-researcher with wide international experience in the disciplines of economics, finance and international business. He has published almost 60 academic papers in peer-reviewed international academic journals, co-authored or edited several books, and written 20 book chapters.
Kearney is best known for his work in open economy macroeconomics, international finance, as well as the causes and transmission of volatility in financial markets. He has considerable international experience, having studied and worked in ten universities in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the UK He has won competitive research awards in both Australia and Ireland including an IRCHSS Senior Research Fellowship. Kearney has jointly led a successful bid to Enterprise Ireland under its High Performance Start-Up programme for a campus company. He has also successfully attracted significant philanthropic funds for College.
