Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) is a national key university of high learning directly administered by the Ministry of Education. Its predecessors were two agricultural colleges belonging to Jinling University and Nanjing University (originally called the Central University). In 1952, the college was created from the merger of these two colleges, together with some departments of the Agricultural College of Zhejiang University. In 1984, the college was renamed Nanjing Agricultural University. October 20 is its anniversary. The President is Prof. Zheng Xiaobo.
The main campus of the university is situated in the picturesque eastern suburbs of Nanjing and is near Sun-Yat-Sen's Mausoleum. There is another campus in the suburb of Puzheng and an Experimental Farm in Jiangpu County. Within the total area of 540 hectares and 40,000 square meters of building space, there are laboratories, classrooms and a library with 1,200,000 volumes. The student enrollment at the university is more than 24,000, among whom there are about 5,200 postgraduate students.
Agriculture is the dominant field, however, NAU has branches of learning such sciences, economics, engineering and the arts. The university consists of 16 colleges, which offer 54 Bachelor's programs, 102 Master's programs and 62 Ph.D. programs. The university has nine postdoctoral programs, eight national key disciplines and 16 provincial (ministerial) key disciplines.
Besides 85 research institutes and laboratories, the university has the National Key Lab of Crop Genetics and Germplasm Enhancement, the National Center of Engineering and Technology of Soybean Improvement, seven provincial (ministerial) key labs and an engineering and technology center of Jiangsu Province. The university staff stands at 2400, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 150 Ph.D supervisors, and 600 professors and associate professors.
NAU, with its predecessors, has trained more than 25,000 personnel in the fields of agricultural education, research, science and technology, finance and trade, and administration, who are working at home and abroad.
There are six academic periodicals published in the university, such as the "Journal of Nanjing Agricultural University", "History of China's Agriculture", and "Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine".
