Starz Animation

Starz Animation is a Canadian CGI animation studio based in Toronto, Ontario, founded in 2007. It is owned by the Starz Media division of Starz, LLC, which in turn is owned by Liberty Media.

Starz Animation Canada was purchased by Starz from IDT Corp. in 2007 as part of a package deal which included Anchor_Bay_Entertainment and Film Roman. IDT had purchased the studio in ??? from the founders, Dan Krech and Jackie Lynette. The original studio was variously named Dan Krech Productions, DKP Effects and DKP Studios at different points during its history. It was founded in 1984.

The first offices were three Victorian style semi-detached houses (equal to one and a half houses) at 48 River Street in Toronto. The company later moved to 489 Queen Street East. After the purchase by IDT, it was moved again to 230 Richmond Street East.

The company started doing video post and then moved into special effects and film work, culminating in effects work for the Seigfried & Roy 3D IMAX vehicle "The Magic Box" (Houdini) and the full CG features "The Nuttiest Nutcracker" (SoftImage) and "Everyone's Hero" (Maya). Also notable is the effects work done with astronomical artist Jon Lomberg.

DKP purchased the first SGI Crimson sold in Canada along with Alias PowerAnimator software. After retiring from active 3D work, it served as the webserver for many years.
