Cao Cao’s army was at Juancheng numbering thirty thousand troops.
Liu Biao , cut off Yuan Shu’s grain supply. Yuan Shu led his army of ten thousand into Chenliu, garrisoningFengqiu where the remainder of the Black Mountain bandits and Yufuluo’s men lent him their aid. The bandits of Heishan and the Shanyu opposed him. Yuan Shu sent his general Liu Xiang to garrison Kuangting. When Cao Cao attacked Liu Xiang, Yuan Shu reinforced him. Both sides battled and Yuan Shu was badly defeated. Yuan Shu retreated to defend Fengqiu and Cao Cao subsequently moved to surround the town. Before the movement was completed, Yuan Shu fled to Xiangyi. Cao Cao pursued to Taishou and diverted the waters of the Qu River from Xiangyi cutting off the canal supplying water to the city. Yuan Shu fled toNingling and Cao Cao pursued on. Yuan Shu then fled toJiujiang . In the summer, the Cao Cao withdrew with his army to Dingtao.
