Andrew Dewar Gibb (
13 February 1888 -24 January 1974 ) was a Scottishpolitician ,barrister andprofessor .Born in
Paisley , Gibb studied at theUniversity of Glasgow . He was appointed to the English bar in 1917 before serving in theRoyal Scots Fusiliers duringWorld War I . After the war, he practised law in England and was a visitinglecturer at theUniversity of Cambridge and theUniversity of Edinburgh . He also wrote articles and textbooks on legal topics. However, in the 1930s he became a
Scottish nationalist and was a founder member of theScottish National Party (SNP). In 1934, he was appointed Regius Professor of Law at the University of Glasgow, and from 1937 to 1939 and 1945 to 1947 was Dean of the University's Law Faculty.Gibb became the leader of the SNP in 1936, serving until 1940. He stood for the party in the
Combined Scottish Universities by-election, 1936 , taking 31.1% of the vote and second place in the poll, but was less successful at the 1938 by-election, his share falling to 18.2%.In 1947, Gibb became a
King's Counsel , and from 1955 to 1957 he was the Chairman of theSaltire Society . He retired from his professorship in 1958.References
