Shippagan, New Brunswick

Shippagan (2006 population: 2,754) is a Canadian town in Gloucester County, New Brunswick.

Located in the northeastern part of the Acadian Peninsula, a combination bridge-causeway connects the town with Lamèque Island to the northeast. Approximately 99% of the town's residents are Francophone.

The town was founded by the Duguay family, from Paspebiac, Quebec, in 1790. Acadian settlers later joined them. Its location was an ideal spot for exporting timber from further inland, as well as fishing. There are also numerous peat bogs in the area.

Shippagan is home to campuses of the Université de Moncton and New Brunswick Community College.

Notables

* Michael Ward, QMJHL defenseman for the Lewiston Maineiacs, and been drafted at the 2007 NHL draft for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
* Luc Bourdon February 16, 1987 – May 29, 2008, a defenseman who played for the Vancouver Canucks (drafted in the first round), and was also a member of the Gold Medal Canadian Junior team. The promising prospect died in a motorcycle accident on May 29 2008.
