He currently is the director of the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, National Institute of Mental Health, which is a part of the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry of Japan. Ito was born in Tokyo in 1954. He graduated from the faculty of Medicine at the
Chiba University with the degree ofBachelor of Medicine in 1980. He was, then, appointed to the Clinical Assistant (equivalent to Clinical Assistant Professorship in North America) of the Department of Psychiatry at the Chiba University Hospital in 1984. Eight years later, in 1992, he further became the Assistant (equivalent to Assistant Professorship) of the Department of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, Chiba University. In 1994, he left the Chiba University for a research position at a national research institute; namely a division chief of one of research divisions in the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, National Institute of Mental Health. He was promoted to the director of the Department in 2000.
