Partnership for Public Service

The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C. dedicated to inspiring a new generation of civil servants and transforming the way government works.
The Partnership was founded by businessman Samuel J. Heyman in 2001 with the knowledge that: “Building, energizing and maintaining a high-quality workforce is the key to success for any organization — and the federal government is no different” [http://www.ourpublicservice.org/OPS/about/ ] . The Partnership is led by President and CEO Max Stier.
Two of the Partnership’s most visible programs are the Service to America Medals [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/26/AR2007022601228.html] , which honors outstanding federal employees for exceptional civil service, and the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government Rankings, an annual survey that ranks the best places to work in the federal government [http://www.usnews.com/usnews/biztech/best-places-to-work/home.htm] .
Service to America Medals
This year’s Service to America medal finalists were announced in a ceremony on Capitol Hill. [http://servicetoamericamedals.org/SAM/finalists08/index.shtml] Service to America Medals have gone to public servants with achievements in fighting nuclear terrorism; cancer research; weapons technology [http://www.newsweek.com/id/74457] ; nuclear waste cleanup; foreign affairs; public housing – and helping wounded soldiers use technology to re-enter the workforce, through the world’s largest electronics accommodations program. Best Places to Work
The Partnership’s Best Places to Work report is the most comprehensive ranking of federal government organizations [http://www.usnews.com/usnews/biztech/best-places-to-work/home.htm] , drawing on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Human Capital Survey of more than 150,000 executive branch employees. The rankings are designed to offer job-seekers unprecedented insight into the best opportunities for public service and to provide managers and government leaders a road map for improving employee engagement and commitment. The most recent rankings, from 2007, can be viewed at [www.bestplacestowork.org] .
Addressing the Federal Government’s Brain Drain
With more than half of the federal workforce retiring in the next five years, [http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1214451,00.html] the Partnership’s work to inspire the best and brightest to join the public sector has attracted new attention. To head off this brain drain, the Partnership is working directly with federal agencies to increase their capacity to recruit and retain the nation's top talent [http://makingthedifference.org/index.shtml] , support Congress to conduct much-needed oversight and consider legislative reforms [http://www.foxbusiness.com/story/uncle-sams-hiring-spree-needs-new-financial-incentives-recruitment-strategy/] , and encourage the American public to hold government accountable for addressing its workforce needs.
The Partnership’s Call to Serve network joins more than 600 colleges and universities with more than 60 federal agencies to educate a new generation about the importance of a strong civil service, help re-establish links between federal agencies and campuses, and provide students with information about federal jobs [http://www.ourpublicservice.org/OPS/programs/calltoserve/] .
