Stanford Exploration Program

Stanford Exploration Program

The Stanford Exploration Program is an academic-industry consortium based at Stanford University to better develop techniques to elucidate the inner structure of the earth using seismic imaging. It is housed in the Mitchell Building on the Stanford Campus adjacent to Palo Alto, California, USA. SEP conducts original research, liaises with industry, employs full time permanent faculty and educates graduate students in geophysics.1

History

SEP was founded as partnership between the Stanford University School of Earth Sciences Department of Geophysics and various industry partners who provide funding for SEP activities. The founder of the SEP was Jon Claerbout who remains involved with the SEP. SEP pioneered development in migration imaging, velocity estimation, dip moveout and slant stack analysis.
