Born atWellingborough and educated atLancing College andHertford College, Oxford , he was ordained in 1890 ["Ordinations. Liverpool. (Official Appointments and Notices)"The Times Tuesday, Jun 03, 1890; pg. 12; Issue 33028; col B] . His ministry began with a curacy atWarrington after which he was appointedAssistant Principal of the "Chester Diocesan Training College" ["The Bishop Of Lewes. (Obituaries)"The Times Wednesday, Oct 17, 1928; pg. 9; Issue 45026; col B] . He then began a long period within theDiocese of Chichester . From 1895 until 1911 he was Second Master andChaplain at his old school and then successivelyVicar ,Rural Dean andArchdeacon ofHastings before being elevated to theEpiscopate .
