Anna De Souza is a fictional character on the British soap opera, 'Emmerdale' played by Emma Davies. She made her first appearance on 8 July 2008.

Character creation and development

Anna De Souza's arrival was announced in June 2008. "Emmerdale" producer Anita Turner said, "Anna is a really interesting character. Actress Emma Davies described Anna as an "extremely fun and confident woman" who also has a "vulnerability", and due to her love for the country, is "more Kim Tate than Sadie King." Character history

Anna had been extremely close to her father, Donald De Souza, while growing up, and had later helped him build his fortune. When she met Mark, Donald dismissed him as a fortune hunter, but Anna refused to end it. After she married Mark, Donald cut her out of his will and cut off all contact. She went on to run her own company in Dubai. By the sixth year of their relationship, Mark had gone through her money and began cheating on her. The marriage was over. Anna, who had kept up with her brother Miles, heard about her her father's illness and realized she had to see him.

Anna arrived in the village during Donald's 73rd birthday party. She met Carl King, whom Donald had planned to appoint managing director of De Souza Enterprises. Anna allowed Carl to think she was only looking for a job, assuming he'd say things to her he wouldn't say if he knew she was Donald's daughter. She and Carl bet their cars for whoever hit both targets in skeet shooting. When Anna saw her father, she easily hit both targets, but later told Carl he could keep his car, as she didn't like it very much.

After telling her father about all the changes in her life, she told him she couldn't let him be swayed by outsider Carl the way she'd been swayed by Mark, and to remember Carl's family was the main business rival for the De Souzas. In spite of Anna's pleas, Donald went through with his plans, telling her she had a lot to prove. However, Anna wasn't going to give up without a fight. She stayed in town, ostensibly to help her brother, and soon began to clash with Carl.

A few weeks after her return, Anna hired Miles' ex-girlfriend Jasmine Thomas to work on their website revamp as well as running errands for Miles. Unfortunately, her matchmaking efforts backfired when Jasmine's new boyfriend Jake Doland verbally ripped Miles to shreds about being around Jasmine. Miles was humiliated and very upset with his sister's interference, and left town without telling anyone his plans.

Anna and the Kings

Anna and Carl King's rivalry would continue to rage, with both of them forever trying to trick and undermine the other to gain the upper hand. However, it soon became clear that a mutual attraction was forming, although neither would initially admit to it.

Things came to a head when Carl, sick of Anna's constant undermining, decided to play a trick on her to get her back. As Anna had been claiming that she wanted to learn De Souza Enterprises from the ground up, Carl agreed to let her take out one of the company trucks for a test ride, neglecting to tell her that he'd only half-filled the fuel tank. She soon became stranded as the truck broke down on a country lane in the middle of nowhere. And who came to her rescue but Carl's devious older brother Matthew King. Anna and Matthew became fast friends, sharing their mutual distrust of Carl, and their similarly ambitious way of conducting business. Carl was clearly jealous of his brother and Anna's budding relationship, and decided to take his on-off girlfriend, Lexi Nicholls back in a bid to make Anna jealous, much to Anna's amusement. She swiftly began to tease him that he liked her but wouldn't admit to it.

Anna was soon having to choose between Carl and Matthew as her relationships with both of them progressed. It's not yet clear if Anna is genuinely interested in either of them, or was manipulating and playing the warring brothers off against each other for her own personal advancement, and amusement. Carl and Anna's frosty partnership had a sharp turnaround in the tearful aftermath of a vicious fight between her and her father Donald, in which Carl comforted her. The pair seemed to see each other in a different light, and Carl kissed her, seemingly to her surprise. After some initial confusion, she was soon hinting that she enjoyed the kiss and wouldn't say no to more, but first Carl would have to break up Lexi. However, when Carl tried to end their relationship, Lexi revealed that she knew about him killing his father, Tom King, forcing Carl to stay with her so that she would not share her findings. Leaving Anna the woman scorned, she furiously told Carl that he would be sorry for making her look like a fool.

Meanwhile, Matthew also tried to kiss Anna after they closed a successful business deal. However, she pulled away admitting that she wanted him, but their relationship could only ever be one of business, not at the time knowing of Carl's failure to dump Lexi. Matthew later asked if he was supposed to hide his feelings for her, and she replied that he would have to if he wanted their friendship and business partnership to continue. Undeterred, Matthew continued to chase Anna despite being turned down a second time.

Anna and Carl's rivalry was back on track, and nastier than ever with both of them soon becoming embroiled in a bidding war over Mill Cottage. Annoyed, Carl complained to Donald who in turn was incensed to discover that Anna was out with Matthew, who he deemed to be nothing more than a troublemaker and unsuitable for his daughter. In retaliation, Donald offered to buy Mill Cottage for Carl and Lexi.

Later, Anna figured out that Carl had betrayed De Souza Enterprises by handing over a rich client to brothers Matthew and Jimmy. Disgraced, Carl was brought out of the company by Donald for £500,000 and soon returned to King & Sons. Donald suffered a heart attack due to the stress of Carl's betrayal and another furious argument with Anna. However, during his recovery in hospital he and Anna soon made up, and Donald expressed his desire to sign De Souza Enterprises over to his daughter, even calling his Solicitor to bring the new contract to the hospital. Much to his surprise, Anna tore the contract up and stated her intention to prove herself to her father before taking full ownership of the company. Reunited, Donald and Anna soon began to plot their revenge against the Kings.

Revenge - Relationship with Matthew King

Matthew visited Donald in hospital (soon after sending Carl off on a business trip to Brussels) to attempt to clear the air between the warring families, saying that they had more to gain working together than against each other. He also told Anna that he didn't want there to be any bad feeling between them. Donald agreed to discuss Matthew's proposal with Anna, but once left alone told Anna that she should use Matthew's feelings for her against him. Anna at first seemed shocked at the suggestion, asking her father how far she was supposed to go with Matthew, and expressing confusion about the route that their plan for revenge was taking. However, desperate to impress, Anna later arranged to meet Matthew who was soon insisting that he take her to dinner, kicking Donald and Anna's plan into action.
