Carl King is a fictional character appearing on the British ITV soap opera "Emmerdale". He is portrayed by Tom Lister.

Overview

Carl was the first of the King family to arrive in Emmerdale. When he arrived in Emmerdale, sly Carl pretended to be footloose and fancy-free. The truth was he was married to the long-suffering Colleen King and had two children - Thomas and Anya. And it soon transpired that despite the 'butter wouldn't melt' persona, Carl was a master of deception.

Carl is the third son of Tom and Mary King. He had a special relationship with his younger brother Max since they can relate to each other through their lowliness in the King hierarchy. When he found out Max had died, he physically collapsed and cried for the remainder of the episode. His older brothers Jimmy and Matthew also care for him (although being businessmen they are reluctant to admit it) and sometimes become protective of him. Both of his parents are dead, Tom having been murdered in a similar way to Paul Marsden's tragic accident.

Having joined Tate Haulage as a driver, Carl duped Scott Windsor into giving him information about a contract the business was vying for and won it for King & Sons himself. Infuriated Zoe Tate couldn’t believe what he’d done. And Zoe isn’t the only woman to be humiliated by Carl. Although Carl is a businessman like his father and brothers, he was nowhere near as ruthless as his older brother Matthew.

Despite still being married, Carl was soon trying to woo Louise Appleton and, when she agreed to go out on a date with him, he thought he’d reeled her in. However, as they prepared to go on their night out, Colleen pulled up in the car and revealed the truth to Louise who slapped him round the face.

Carl’s bad boy side had long infuriated his father Tom, who considered him to be the black sheep of his family. So when Carl made an absolute show of himself at the family’s big party by being caught getting frisky with Chas Dingle, Tom was furious.

But Carl was surprised by how strongly he felt for brassy Chas. The pair were soon very close, and got closer still when Carl confessed his darkest secret to his shocked girlfriend.

Paul Marsden's death

Carl had been with postman Paul Marsden on the day he plunged to his death from the top of some scaffolding. Although it was an accident, Carl turned to his big brothers Jimmy and Matthew for help - and, wanting to avoid scandal, they moved the body so their little brother wouldn’t be implicated in Paul's death.

Chas was sympathetic, realising Carl was wracked with guilt and it looked like their relationship was about to move to the next level.

Relationship with Chloe Atkinson

However, there was competition for Carl’s heart from redhead Chloe Atkinson. Having enjoyed a one-night-stand with Carl just before he and Chas got together properly, Chloe was determined to win her man back and launched a campaign of poison pen letters against Chas.

Her evil behaviour paid off when Chas became convinced that he was betraying her. The couple split soon after. Before long, Chloe got Carl all to herself and Chas was heartbroken. While he was attracted to Chloe’s good looks, Carl wasn’t very interested in her personality.

So when he tried to cool the relationship, she hatched another plan. Pretending she was pregnant, Chloe got Carl to agree to stand by her and then tried desperately to conceive without him realising.

Relationship with Chas Dingle

When Carl discovered Chloe wrote the letters to Chas, he kicked her out and the extent of her deceit was exposed. With Chloe gone, Carl kept a low profile for a while before coming to the realisation that he still had feelings for Chas.

But he was too late and Chas left to join the army, giving him reason to believe there could be something between them again in the future. While Chas was gone, Carl formed a close friendship with her cousin Delilah – whom she hated! Although they bonded beautifully, Carl didn’t reciprocate Del’s strong romantic feelings for him – until he was blind drunk!

But waking up having slept with Del, she broke it off when she realised Carl still loved Chas. He went to the army barracks and tracked her down before gatecrashing a wedding to declare his love.

During this incident, Carl dropped Chas and caused her to hurt her leg – the injury meant she could no longer serve in the forces and had to come back to Emmerdale. After a while she fell back into Carl’s arms too.Now they were back together again, Carl wanted to make things permanent and asked Chas to marry him. She refused initially with the fear she could not trust him. However after tackling his vertigo, by completing a wing walk alongside cancer-sufferer Alice Wilson, he proved to Chas how much he loved her and she accepted.

Now engaged, the couple decided to move into Home Farm with Carl’s dad Tom and Chas became even more firmly ensconced in the King family by becoming Jimmy’s PA at the company.

But tensions were about to erupt as Matthew King had walked away from the family and the business to be with his one true love Sadie King – whom everyone despised. Setting up a rival business, Matthew used Carl as a pawn to leak some false information meaning Jimmy blew an important deal.

Sickened by his brother’s duplicity, Carl hit him and decided he no longer wanted him in his life. Then Carl worked hard to live up to his father’s expectations in the business and tried to keep Chas happy at home.

Aftermath of Tom King's murder

Carl has discovered he has a half sister Scarlett Nicholls, who he is finding it difficult to bond with, siding with Matthew that they should buy Scarlett's shares and her mother Carrie out of the business.

When Scarlett learned of this she prevented her mother from going through with it. Carl has since softened towards his little sister. He remained uncomfortable around Carrie however, and it was revealed that he lost his virginity to her as a teenager. He'd had a massive crush on her then, so he was upset when she said it meant nothing. The fact she went on to have an affair and a love-child with his father was especially hard to handle.

The murderer unmasked

After being released from court on Thursday 17 May because Hari Prasad and Louise Appleton's evidence had been revealed as lies, Matthew attacked his older brother Jimmy and told him to admit he killed their father. He did so and as Matthew began to hit and punch him, Carl then confess that he was in fact the real culprit, having brutally killed his father on Christmas Day.

He revealed that he had entered Tom's room on Christmas night. A furious row had broken out due to Tom paying Chas to leave Carl and, in the heat of the moment, Carl grabbed a heavy statuette and bashed his father over the head with it. Carl had then pushed his dad away, causing him to crash through the window to his death.

Relationship with Grace Barraclough

Carl and DCI Grace Barraclough were secretly dating each other, which is being done as a honeytrap, she is asking Carl who killed his father Tom King but Carl is not revealing who did it and they have ended up in bed with each other. Grace and Carl were saying if the relationship between her and Carl gets out and her boss found out it could cost her, her career.Carl was hurt by her rejection and he got drunk at Home Farm and he confessed to Jimmy and Matthew that he had been sleeping with her for weeks. He then passed out and he was bunged into a van and was taken out of the country by a driver of the family. Jimmy went along too to make sure that Carl kept his mouth shut.

Carl was reluctant to finish with Grace. Carl has returned from Belgium and he was arrested for drink driving so he could get close to Grace. They proceeded to get close again in his cell. His brothers are under the impression that he has got over Grace. It is revealed that Grace finds out it was Carl who killed his father after he confesses that he murdered Tom. Grace is faced with a choice: give up her feelings for Carl or give up her career.

Grace Barraclough's death

When Carl decided to confess to his dad's murder he walked to the police station holding hands with Grace while Jimmy looked on tearfully after begging Carl to reconsider. All of a sudden Carl's phone went off and it was Matthew, so he hung up. He watched Grace cross the road in front of him and she was mowed down by a lorry and died instantly.

Carl finally got over his dad's death and resolved to not care what happens around him, he became a stone cold buisnessman and nearly mirrored the coldness of his brother Matthew, Carl is currently interested in Lexi Nicholls.

Relationship with Lexi Nicholls

In 2007 Carl started a relationship with Lexi Nicholls. This kicked off properly when Carrie Nicholls left for Canada, and Scarlett's trust money needed to be handed over. Lexi got close to Carl so she might get ahead of the competittion. This failed, as Matthew King won. However the relationship carries on, but it looks like it will be put to the test...

De Souza Enterprises

When Carl became sick of Matthew, he switched sides to De Souza Enterprises. He did this as the local refuse contract was up for renewal, and De Souza won. Matthew was livid and this started the latest rift in the King Family.

When both parties attended an event at the Hotten Chamber of Commerce, Matthew and Carl argued. Matthew attacked Carl with a golf club, and he ended up in hospital.

When Matthew started blackmailing Lexi to spy on Carl, Matthew stole De Souza ideas for a new 'green relaunch'. Carl found out and decided he didn't want a fight. The argument has been tamed.

Relationship with Anna De Souza

Soon enough Carl had won enough respect with De Souza Enterprises head Donald De Souza that he'd been appointed to take over the company after Donald's retirement in July 2008. However, things would not be easy for him in his new position with the arrival of Anna De Souza, Donald's estranged yet strong willed and business savvy daughter. Donald had disowned Anna after she married a man he didn't approve of and moved to Dubai. However, after the breakup of her marriage, Anna decided to move back home to try and repair her relationship with her father. She also wanted the family business in her control, and made her intentions clear to her new rival Carl.

The pair continued to have a frosty and argumentative working relationship, constantly trying to trick and undermine each other. But it soon became clear that there was an attraction between them, and Anna began to tease Carl that he liked her but wouldn't admit it. He was clearly jealous of her budding friendship and business partnership with his devious older brother Matthew, and took on-off girlfriend Lexi Nicholls back to annoy Anna, much to her amusement.

However, there soon came a thaw in Carl and Anna's relationship in the aftermath of a particularly heated argument between her and Donald, wherein Carl ended up comforting her. The pair seemed to see each other in a new light, and a hug turned into a kiss. Anna initially seemed torn between Carl and Matthew, but soon let Carl know that she wanted more with him. It has not yet been revealed if Anna's feelings are genuine or if she was attempting to manipulate Carl in order to get control of the business. After giving into passion and kissing again, Anna let Carl know that she wouldn't be his until he dumped Lexi. However, he managed to talk her into the bedroom, and Lexi nearly caught them in their tryst.

Carl, telling Anna he wanted to be with properly, arranged to meet Lexi and let her know it was over between them. However, Lexi revealed that whilst on holiday in Thailand, her mother Carrie had told her about Carl's role in his father Tom's death. Knowing that she could use his darkest secret against him, Carl decided not to end his relationship with Lexi, leaving Anna the woman scorned. Furiously, she told him that no one makes a fool out of her, reverting their relationship back to their previous animosity.
