Edgardo Coghlan (1928 - 1995)
Edgardo Coghlan was a talented artist born in
Los Mochis ,Sinaloa in 1928 to an Irish father and Mexican mother. He first studied at the Academia Nacional de Artes Plasticas inMexico City and later under the direction ofJose Bardasano .He was awarded first prize from the Circulo de Bellas Artes in 1954 and 1955. The Salon Anual de la Acuarela held at the Instituto de Arte de Mexico awarded him 8 consecutive recognitions which helped him earn critical acclaim. He was one of the founders of the Sociedad Mexicana de Acuarelistas. In 1968 he was also recognized for his watercolor titled "El Entierro" that was exhibited at the Palacio de Bellas Artes as part of the Cultural Olympics, an event that promoted the arts and coincided with the Summer Games held in Mexico City that same year. Among his many recognitions, he was the recipient of the Premio Nacional de la Acuarela and the Premio Sinaloa de Ciencias y Artes which he received in 1991.
He held numerous exhibitions in
Mexico ,Chile ,Scotland ,the Netherlands ,Greece ,Germany ,Canada and the US. His work has been included into the collections of important institutions such as theMitchell Art Museum inMount Vernon IL,JFK Presidential Library & Museum inBoston MA, theRonald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum inSimi Valley CA, the Museo de Arte de Sinaloa and the Museo de la Acuarela Mexicana. Some of his most famous collectors include a few former presidents likeAdolfo Lopez Mateos ,Gustavo Diaz Ordaz ,Luis Echeverria Alvarez ,Jose Lopez Portillo ,Miguel de la Madrid , andCarlos Salinas de Gortari .In 1993
Ignacio Pichardo Pagaza hosted the opening of the Museo de la Acuarela-Sala Edgardo Coghlan inToluca to house 40 works that he made specially for this space the previous year. Edgardo Coghlan, accomplished Mexican artist died in 1995. TheMuseo de Arte Moderno currently houses some of his works in its permanent collection.References
