Gunib

Gunib ( _ru. Гуниб), also spelled "Ghunib", is an aul (fortified village) in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. It is the administrative center of Gunibsky District. Population: 2,406 (2002 Census); 2,405 (1989 Census).

Gunib was historically important as a natural fortress during the Caucasian War of the 19th century. The Imam Shamil, leader of the Chechen and Daghestani tribes, made his last stand against the Russians at Gunib, where he gave himself up to the Russian commander, Prince Alexander Bariatinsky, on August 25, 1859.
