From 1984 to 2001, Kulkov played for a host of clubs in
Russia , most notablyFC Spartak Moscow , from where he left for a Portuguese league stint withSL Benfica (1991-94, where he played with fellow internationalsAlexander Mostovoi andSergei Yuran ) andFC Porto (1994-95, joined by Yuran). He also played withAlverca F.C. in 1999-2000.In 1996, he signed on loan with
Millwall F.C. in the English second division, and retired from playing football at 35.International career
Kulkov made his debut for the USSR on
April 26 ,1989 in the1990 FIFA World Cup qualifier against East Germany. Despite playing regularly for the national team for several years, he did not participate in any major tournament. In 1990 he was not selected for the final stage squad, and missed Euro 1992 (with CIS) and 1996 due to injuries.Before the 1994 World Cup, several Russia players, including Kulkov, signed a letter demanding that team manager
Pavel Sadyrin resign. Sadyrin did not and Kulkov refused to go to the World Cup (he still says he does not regret that decision).Honours
