The road is mi to km|6.587 long and runs fromU.S. Route 290 in Stonewall eastward to US 290 on the east end of the historical park. The road runs alongside thePedernales River for almost its entire length. RR 1 intersectsRanch to Market Road 1623 in Stonewall as well asTexas Park Road 49 on the LBJ National Historical Park. The road is also known as Klein-Buebsahm Road. Ranch Road 1 is the only road in Texas designated as a ranch road; all other roads of similar usage are designated as farm-to-market or ranch-to-market roads.History
Ranch Road 1 was designated on January 1, 1964, a little more than one month after Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president, from its current western terminus at US 290 near Stonewall to a point convert|1.2|mi|km west of the county line between Gillespie and Blanco counties, inside the
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park . Four months later, the road was extended eastward to its present terminus near Hye. The entire route was a previous routing of U.S Route 290.Junction list
