Antaeus (short story)

Antaeus (short story)

Antaeus is a short story by Borden Deal.

It about a boy named T.J. from the country who moves to the city with his parents and organizes an effort by a group of neighborhood boys to grow a rooftop garden. They are successful in cultivating grass, but at the end of the story are caught by the building owner, who orders the garden destroyed. Rather than let this happen, T.J. destroys it himself, throwing the dirt off the roof. This story has appeared in many elementary school textbooks. It is an archetypical tale of rural ways clashing with urban lifestyles.
