John Richardson (scholar)

John Richardson, FAS of Wadham College, Oxford was the editor of the first Persian-Arabic-English dictionary in 1778-1780.Clarke, John. (1806). [http://books.google.com/books?id=M003KRjCipYC&pg=PA273&lpg=PA273&dq=Persian+and+Arabic+dictionary+richardson&source=web&ots=y1Pv5ECmFF&sig=dF9p58a0LXj56fZ-6btKQol_2i4&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=10&ct=result#PPA273,M1 "The Bibliographical Miscellany; Or, Supplement to the Bibliographical," p. 276] -277.] His seminal work on Persian grammar, written in collaboration with Sir William Jones, was noteworthy amongst the early works on this subject; and it remains significant in the context of that philological foundation from which all subsequent grammatical studies were to evolve. [Lieber, Francis "et al.". (1835). [http://books.google.com/books?id=vfJPAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA39&lpg=PA39&dq=Persian+and+Arabic+dictionary+richardson&source=web&ots=2bp-XQ3TJP&sig=l4XiHR8LapgOLy5C_HJ72I8919Y&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=7&ct=result#PPA39,M1 "Persian Language, Literature and Religion" in "Encyclopædia Americana," Vol X, p. 39.] ]

Richardson's scholarly compilation was organized in a format similar to Franciszek Meniński's "Thesaurus Linguarum Orientalis, Turcicæ, Arabicæ, Persicæ" (1680). [see above] ]

Each book in the the two-volume set was sold separately; and many more of the first part (the Perisan-Arabic-English volume) were sold than the second part (the English-Persian-Arabic volume). When booksellers found themselves with an overstock of first edition broken sets, a greater number of copies of the second edition's first book were printed. [see above] ]

Richardson's ground-breaking scholarship was more broadly disseminated in Charles Wilkins' several revised versions of the dictionary. [Zenker, J. Th. (1846). [http://books.google.com/books?id=d-oKAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA13&lpg=PA13&dq=Persian+and+Arabic+dictionary+richardson&source=web&ots=N8ULnqKxby&sig=7XO5NGXgToBoriXnWtqFsMtSUG8&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result "Bibliotheca orientalis: Manuel de bibliographie orientale," p.13.] ] Subsequent work by 19th century philologists Francis Johnson, Francis Joseph Steingass and others would ensure that Richardson's name would continue to be well known as an orientalist and as a scholar.
