Alexander Gelman was born in
Leningrad ,USSR toMaria Gelman a musician andSimon Gelman a physician. Maternal grandparents both worked at theMikhaylovsky Theatre and young Alexander (Sasha) literally took his first steps there. In1973 the family emigrated toIsrael and in1976 toUSA . In1978 he graduated fromCharles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst,Ohio .Training
Gelman received his BFA in theatre from
Birmingham-Southern College (1982 ) and his MFA in Directing fromBoston University (1985 ) He also spends a month at theUniversity of Illinois at aDirecting Colloquiuum conducted byEdwin Sherin ,Arvin Brown ,John Reich ,Garland Wright ,Clifford Williams ,Vinnette Carroll , andGerald Freedman .Personal life

After moving to
New York City in1985 Gelman begins to work astranslator anddirector . One of his early directing engagements wasCarmen atChattanooga Symphony and Opera which was his first collaboration withVakhtang Jordania . At this time he also began his work as assistant and interpreter to Russian directors working in the US. The first one wasYuri Lyubimov atArena Stage , on a production ofCrime and Punishment . The two later worked onMaster and Margarita atAmerican Repertory Theatre inCambridge andLulu at theLyric Opera of Chicago . He also directs a filmInfinity , staringMegan Blake . After a number of years free-lancing as director and translator he accepted a position of Head of Directing at theUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln , (1991 ) where he stayed until1994 . At that time he moved toSalt Lake City where he took over the directing program at theUniversity of Utah . This began a long a fruitful relationship withUtah Opera andAnne Ewers , its General Director. Among the productions there he directedEugene Onegin ,L'incoronazione di Poppea ,Turn of the Screw and many others. During this time also directs inNew Zealand atCanterbury Opera , where he collaborates with DameMalvina Major . Additional engagements atIdaho Opera ,Ashland-Highland Music Festival and others. In2001 appointed Director of the School of Theatre and Dance atNorthern Illinois University . In2006 becomes Producing Artistic Director of theOrganic Theater Company ofChicago . At the Organic he has directed his own adaptations ofThe $30,000 Bequest byMark Twain ,Bartleby the Scrivener byHerman Melville , andJoseph Conrad 'sThe Secret Agent . He also directedEugene Ionesco 'sMan with Bags ,Friedrich Durrenmatt 'sPlay Strindberg , andShimizu Kunio 'sThe Dressing Room .
