HMS Acheron (1911)

HMS "Acheron" was the name ship of the "Acheron" class destroyer of the British Royal Navy. She is named after the River Acheron, believed in Greek Mythology to be a branch of the River Styx. She was the fifth ship of the Royal Navy to bear the name.

Construction

"Acheron" was ordered during the building programme of 1910-11 and built by John I. Thornycroft & Company of Woolston. She was launched on 27 June 1911. Capable of 28 knots, she carried two convert|4|in|mm|0|sing=on guns, other smaller guns and 21 inch torpedo tubes and had a complement of 72 men.

Wartime Service

Serving with the First Destroyer Flotilla, she became part of the Grand Fleet at the outbreak of war and was present at both the Battle of Dogger Bank and the Battle of Jutland.

On 10 March 1915, in company with HMS "Attack" and HMS "Ariel" she attacked "U-12" near Aberdeen. The submarine attempted to dive but was rammed by "Ariel". "U-12" then surfaced and was shelled by "Acheron" and "Attack", and sank with the loss of 19 lives; 10 survivors were rescued.

Disposal

"Acheron" was sold on 9 May 1921cite web|url=http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/acheron.htm |title=Battleships-Cruisers.co.uk website - Acheron Class|accessdate=2008-07-01] to Ward for breaking. She was sold again on 20 September 1923 to J J King.
