- Tokyo Prostitution
In Tokyo,
prostitution is one of the oldest commerces, with a history of several hundred years. In the early 17th century, first attempts were made to criminalize prostitution inYoshiwara in Edo (present-dayTokyo ). A law was passed which required prostitutes to register and work in secured facilities, it's main purpose being for tax collection. Prostitutes were divided into classes or ranks, and the men of society would use the services of those afforded to their position in the city.In modern times, Tokyo's prostitution trade is well regarded for it's high class of services and large
customer base . Because of Tokyo's position as a top 5 global business & trade city, the prostitution industry continues to thrive in Tokyo. Clients in Tokyo on business trips or trade conventions, along with traditional tourists continue to provide demands for Tokyo's sex services, providing economic benefits to the Asian metropolis. The legality of prostitution in Tokyo is constantly debated. Despite a 1956 decree that "No person may either do prostitution or become the customer...", the legality of sexual acts outside of coitus is generally accepted. Movements tend to repeat every few years aimed at legalizing or criminalizing all forms of adult consensual prostitution, yet the 1956 law appears to stand the test of time and repeated amending efforts.
