Fred Sturm

Fred Sturm (born March 21, 1951 in Woodstock, Illinois) is a jazz composer, arranger, and teacher. He studied at Lawrence University, the University of North Texas, and the Eastman School of Music. He performed with the jazz nonet Matrix from 1974 to 1977 and served as Director of Jazz Studies at [http://www.lawrence.edu/ Lawrence University] from 1977 to 1991. He joined the [http://esm.rochester.edu/ Eastman School of Music] faculty in 1991 as professor of jazz composition/arranging, conductor of the [http://esm.rochester.edu/ensembles/eje.php Eastman Jazz Ensemble] and [http://esm.rochester.edu/ensembles/studio_orch.php Studio Orchestra] , and chair of the [http://www.esm.rochester.edu/Jazz/ Eastman Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department] . In 2002, he returned home to Wisconsin to direct the [http://www.lawrence.edu/conservatory/jazz/ Lawrence University Jazz and Improvisational Music Department] and hold the Kimberly-Clark Endowed Professorship in Music.

Sturm resides in DePere, Wisconsin with Susan, his wife for over 30 years. His son Ike Sturm is a New York City bassist, composer, educator, and Assistant to the Director of Music for the Jazz Ministry at [http://www.saintpeters.org/ Saint Peter's Church] in Manhattan. Daughter [http://www.madelinesturm.com/ Madeline Sturm] is a New York based artist and musician residing in Brooklyn.

Composer/Arranger

Sturm's "Migrations," a musical plea for world unity comprised of indigenous music from 22 countries, was premiered by vocalist [http://www.bobbymcferrin.com/ Bobby McFerrin] and the [http://www1.ndr.de/orchester_chor/ndr_bigband/index.html?redir=1/ NDR Big Band] in 2007 and toured Europe the following summer. His original work "Abstract Image" won the 2003 "ASCAP/IAJE Commission in Honor of Quincy Jones".
