Geylang Methodist School (Secondary) (Abbreviation: GMS(S)) is a co-ed school located in Aljunied, Singapore. It was formerly known as Geylang Methodist Girls' School until 1984 when it started to take in boys. The school offers the express, normal academic and technical streams. The school is currently 84 this year.

History

In 1924, the District Superintendent Rev Lloyd Sullivan began the Geylang Methodist Girls' School with Mrs Chan Han Kiat and Miss Walker who were members of the Methodist Church. With a pupil enrolment of 27 (all girls), the school had no premises. So the sanctuary of Geylang Chinese Methodist Church was used as classrooms during the week. The school stopped using the church premises when the enrolment increased and 4 new classrooms were built next to the church.

1927 : The school moved from the present Geylang Post Office site to the present Aljunied MRT station premises. Ms Muriel Kuntsford (who later became Mrs Barnes) was appointed the Principal.

1949 : The school qualified to be given aid by government. Up till today, we are a government-aided school.

1951 : The school continued to expand and it eventually had secondary classes and became a full school.

1952 : Mrs SA Daniel joined the school and watched it grow for 29 years into a full school.

1954 : Our first batch of pupils took the Cambridge Examination!!! (equivalent of the GCE 'O' level Exam).

1959 : The school enrolment grew to 420 pupils.

1960 : The first Board of Management was founded with Rev AV Ayaduray as Chairman.

1974 : Geylang Methodist Sec School expanded its classrooms and physical facilities. An extension block which housed the school hall, Science Lab and Home Economics Room was officially dedicated by the then Director of Education Mr Chan Kai Yau.

1974-79 : Tay Guat Kim represented Singapore in Asian & SEA Games. The choir performed at the National Theatre.

1984 : With the support and financial assistance from the Methodist churches, we were able to build our present premises. We moved!!! With relocation, the school was split into 2 schools - primary and secondary. And with the expansion came the boys, giving rise to our present school: Geylang Methodist Secondary School. The first walkathon was conducted at East Coast Park.

1986 : Pupils wrote, produced and acted in a play called 'Kopi Love' at Marine Parade Library. First Singathon was conducted on 4 Oct to raise funds for the school building. The Primary and Secondary Schools celebrated its official opening of its premises by Bishop Ho Chee Sin on 29 Aug.

1990 : The school participated in the SYF Opening with a dance item 'Dance of Joy'. Chitra Janardhanan was the winner of the Plain Speaking Competition in 1989. She later went on to win the World Debating Championship at Princeton University (USA) in 1995.

1992 : The Rifle Range in the basement of the canteen was renovated and renamed Wesley Hall. Weekly chapel services have been held here since. The old library was also renovated and equipped as the Media Resource Library.

1994 : The school building was dedicated on 3 Aug 1994 by Bishop Ho Chee Sin on 3 Aug. The girls' softball team was formed and has since brought us much honor at zonal and national level. Our girls also played in the National Team.1997 : The school bade farewell to Mrs Doreen Chan who retired after serving 18 years as Principal. We welcomed Mrs Marion Tan in her place.

1998 : Upgrading of the school went into action this year in preparation for single session. The Band participated in the National Competition and was placed in Category 1 under the baton of Mr James Fong who has been with the Band since the formation in 1986.

The school crest
The School Crest is the embodiment of our aims and
aspirations for the Geylang Methodist Schools.
The Shield offers protection and reminds us of
the Lord God who is our strength, our help and our shield.

Enshrined in the heart of the shield is a flaming torch formed by the letters 'M' and 'S'.
This symbolises the passion of GMS to seek
the Light and Truth in Jesus Christ who is the Light of the World,
and whose Truth will set us free.

The white 27-point starburst is inspired by
our heritage when the school started with 27 pupils in 1924.
This inspires us to continuously strive for
pure brilliance and ingenuity grounded in our education.

The colours blue and gold frame our crest and represent heaven and earth respectively,
reflecting our heavenly aspirations
which are firmly grounded in our earthly realism to
'Grow in Friendship, Body and Mind'.

Pupils' Creed

As pupils of GMS(S), We stand as one to keep the spirit of our motto:
'To grow in friendship, body and mind'.

We pledge to be God~fearing and True,
giving regards to our parents
and those in authority.
Respecting the rights of others
and showing compassion to those in need.

We vow to be honest, diligent and disciplined
and with God's help,
we strive to give our best
for the betterment of ourselves,
our school and our country.

chool Song

Our School Song
