Lila Cockrell

Lila Cockrell (born 1922) is a former Mayor of San Antonio, Texas.

During World War II, Lila Cockrell served as an officer in the United States Navy as part of their WAVES program.

On May 1, 1975, Lila Cockrell became Mayor of San Antonio, Texas. In total, she served three terms as mayor from 1975-1981 and from 1989-1991. She is celebrated as the first female mayor of a large, metropolitan city.

Mrs. Cockrell graduated from Southern Methodist University and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

In honor of her achievements, the city of San Antonio named a performing arts center after Mrs. Cockrell. The Lila Cockrell Theatre is the premiere venue for the arts in San Antonio.
