Arthur Edgar Gravenor Rhodes

Arthur Edgar Gravenor Rhodes

Arthur Edgar Gravenor Rhodes (1859–1922) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament and Mayor of Christchurch.

Member of Parliament

Arthur Rhodes represented Gladstone (1887–90) and Geraldine (1890–93) electorates in the New Zealand House of Representatives (Wilson, p.229).

"The Member for Geraldine", wrote a brutally frank parliamentary reporter, "has few of the requisites for a public speaker. His manner is singularly awkward. Words do not come readily to his bidding and when they do come they are not always employed in the right place" (quoted in The Christchurch Press, March 10 1984, p.17).

Rhodes was a lawyer in Christchurch. In 1884 he built 'Te Koraha' which now is part of Rangi Ruru.

Arthur Rhodes was Mayor of Christchurch in 1901.
