The song was originally recorded by Lavigne in 2006, and is included on the Limited Edition version of her third studio album, "The Best Damn Thing". The song was later covered by British singer Leona Lewis in 2007, for her debut album, "Spirit".

Lyrical Structure

"I Will Be" is lyrically similar to Lavigne's past hit, "When You're Gone". In the chorus of "I Will Be", Lavigne sings, "I'll be with you forever, to get you through the day, and make everything okay". The chorus to "When You're Gone" has a similar embodiment- "The words I need to hear, to always get me through the day, and make it okay". The lyrics to Leona Lewis' version of the song are slightly altered- in the Middle 8, Lewis sings, "Without you, I can't breathe", whereas in the original recording, Lavigne sings, "Without you, I can't sleep".
