Flour Riot of 1837

Flour Riot of 1837

The Flour Riot of 1837 was a riot that broke out in New York City in 1837. The riot was caused by a combination of poverty and the rising cost of flour, which had increased from $5.62 a barrel to $12 a barrel. [Zinn, Howard. "A People's History of the United States". Overview

Rallies and meetings were held in several cities in the United States regarding the rising cost of necessities. Flour, pork, and coal had increased to higher prices than usual. The Equal Rights Party (or Locofocos) called for a meeting in New York "at 4 o'clock, P.M. on Monday afternoon". An orator at the meeting called for the attendees to offer the flour dealer Eli Hart $8 per barrel. The crowd forced the door to his store open and began to roll barrels out of it. Hart arrived later with the police, who fought with the crowd on Day Street. They then continued to take hundreds of barrels of flour as well as sacks of wheat. This continued until the night, when more police and soldiers arrived.
