H.M.S. Pinafore/Sources

H.M.S. Pinafore/Sources

In "H.M.S. Pinafore", Gilbert used several of his previous "Bab Ballads" as sources, taking elements from them and working them into dialogue or lyrics of the opera. S. J. Adair Fitz-Gerald writes that "H.M.S. Pinafore" and "several of the subsequent operas were simply and delightfully the amazingly extravagant "Bab Ballads" grown up." [Fitz-Gerald, p. 35] In this Appendix, we provide the Bab Ballads identified by reliable sources as sources for "H.M.S. Pinafore".
