James Russell (Ecologist)

Dr. James Russell is a prominent New Zealand ecologist.

Most widely known for his ground breaking research work on Norwegian rats in New Zealand ("Rattus norvegicus"), one of his study species swam over 400 metres between two Hauraki Gulf islands, breaking the record for the longest distance ever recorded by a swimming rat. The intentions of the rat are believed to have been amorous.

The rat, known as 'Razza' was featured in "Nature". Witi Ihimaera also wrote a children's book about Razza. [cite web|url=http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/about/news/articles/2006/11/razza.cfm|title=Witi Ihimaera puts Razza the Rat back into the spotlight|publisher=University of Auckland|date=23 November 2006]
