History

Great American Cookie Company was founded by future CEO Michael Coles [. http://www.augusthouse.com/authors_artists/bios/Michael_Coles. Retrieved 02-Apr-2008.] and partner Arthur Karp, who each invested $4,000 to develop a business selling gourmet cookies on the strength of an old family recipe passed on to Karp by his grandmother [18-Jun-2002 http://www.bison.com/press_greatamericancookies_06182002. Retrieved 02-Apr-2008.] . That same year the first store opened in Atlanta’s Perimeter Mall, which continues to operate to this day [http://www.thefranchisemall.com/franchises/details/10987-0-Great_American_Cookie_Company.htm. Retrieved 02-April-2008.] .

Coles and Great American Cookie Company were initially met with rejection from mall owners and managers. Leasing space was denied under the assumption that the cookie concept would fail outside of east and west coast markets. The first store in Perimeter Mall became successful in its first month, and the company, renamed Great American Cookies in 1985, first became franchised a year after its opening [26-Jan-2008. http://www.ceomakers.com/SpeakerNotes/Michael%20Coles.doc. Retrieved 02-Apr-2008.] .

When Coles sold Great American Cookies to Mrs. Famous Brands in 1998, the company had sales of over $100 million [07-Dec-2007. http://www.iei-inc.org/Dec_6__2007_forum.html. Retrieved 02-Apr-2008.] .

On January 29, 2008, Great American Cookies was acquired by NexCen Brands Inc. for its Quick Service Restaurant portfolio, which includes sister companies Marble Slab Creamery, MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery, Pretzel Time, and Pretzel Maker [29-Jan-2008. http://www.streetinsider.com/Corporate+News/NexCen+Brands+(NEXC)+Buys+the+Great+American+Cookie+Company+From+Mrs.+Fields+Famous+Brands/3302691.html.
