John Samuels (born
March 25 ,1961 , inGalveston, Texas ) is an Americanfilm actor , director, andscreenwriter . He works under thestage name John Stockwell. He is a he has produced numerous films, including "Under Cover" (1987), "Cheaters" (2000), "crazy/beautiful " (2001), "Blue Crush " (2002), and "Into the Blue " (2005). John Stockwell played lead actor, onscreen "Losin' It" (1983).He has appeared as an actor in such films as "Christine", "Top Gun", "Losin' It", "Eddie and the Cruisers", "Nixon" and "Breast Men". As a director, he made the
Kirsten Dunst film "crazy/beautiful" as well as the Emmy-nominated "Cheaters". Finally, Stockwell is a writer and wrote both "Breast Men" and "Cheaters" as well as Mark Wahlberg's "Rock Star" and "Blue Crush".Stockwell and his cinematographer, David Hennings, have devised some innovative ways to present ocean scenes. Instead of shooting them straight-on, which is standard for surfing films (and ESPN), He also uses overhead images and often takes the camera under water. And any stunt doubling, of which there is probably a fair amount, is effectively obfuscated.
On Blue Crush
Initially, Stockwell wanted to use all surfers of the role but eventually settled upon training a set of Hollywood actors for the film. The one exception of course being Sanoe Lake. Says Stockwell, "There are certain movies where a high-profile name would be distracting and one about surfing falls into that category. You would watch a big star surfing and think, 'Wow, I didn't know Sarah Michelle Gellar surfs that well!' It was to Universal's and Imagine's credit that they were supportive of having the lead being a relative unknown."
