Wave Picking

Wave Picking

Wave picking is a term used in a Warehouse Management System to describe the simultaneous picking of multiple customer orders, in batch, done to improve the efficiency of the overall picking operation in the warehouse (e.g. reducing travelling time). The main scheme used in wave picking is 2 step picking which involves the following:

1. Releasing a wave (batch) of orders to the warehouse. The size of this batch is dependent on what efficiencies are attempting to be made.

2. Step 1 Picking, Picking in bulk from the main storage areas of the warehouse (racking, bulk storage, shelf storage etc) into 1 large picking area. This consolidates the requirements of different customers and allows the picker to only visit each storage location (bin) once for the complete wave and pick all items required for that wave regardless of customer order.

3. Step 2 Picking, Picking to customer order from the Picking Area, where there is only the product required for that wave's customer orders. Packing also takes place in this second step.
