"Tityus" is a large genus of scorpions belonging to the family Buthidae. There are currently 185 described species distributed throughout the Caribbean and South America and in Central America as far north as Costa Rica. The genus contains several dangerously venomous scorpions, the best known of which is the Brazilian yellow scorpion "T. serrulatus" whose venom can cause severe symptoms (which can include death in small children).
