Most of the Kurdish people in Sweden live in the capital Stockholm but also in Uppsala.The majority of the Kurdish political refugees choose in an early age, Sweden, as their new host country and this is the reason why the Kurds have a cultural image in Sweden. [http://www.saradistribution.com/img/saradistr_press1.gif] The Swedish government have been very helpful to the Kurds, they have helped them to spread their culture by publishing books in Kurdish [The Kurds: A Concise Handbook Av Mehrdad R. Izady P.100] , something that is forbidden to do in especially west Kurdistan and north Kurdistan.

Chronological Kurdish arrivals to Sweden

* 1967- 1970 A couple of Kurdish students from south Kurdistan was expelled and fled to Sweden where they continued with their studies.

* 1971-1975 Military coup in Turkey and the peace agreement in Iraq was cut. Many Kurds came to Uppsala.

* 1975 Huddinge becomes the first municipality offering Kurdish as parental language. [ [Rohat Alakom - Kurderna, fyrtio år i Sverige s.98] ]

* 1976- 1980 Many reasons made the Kurds escape different parts of Kurdistan in this period to Sweden. The following reasons was the military coup in Turkey, the masskillings against Kurds in the Marash province., the war against Saddam Hussein in south Kurdistan, the revolt against the shah in Iran and the Baath-regime in Syrias treatment of its Kurdish population.

* 1984 Education of Kurdish teachers in Stockholm is began. [ [Rohat Alakom - Kurderna, fyrtio år i Sverige s.97] ]

* 1981-1985 During the military junta in Turkey, the Kurdish opposition fled to Syria and Iraq. The war against Iran-Iraq and the warfare against the Kurds in both of the countries became moore intense.

* 1991-1995 The crises in Kuwait, the war in south Kurdistan, mass exodus from north Kurdistan.

* 1996- Continuing immigration of Kurds, mostly from north Kurdistan and from south Kurdistan.
