Tourism in Tanzania

Tourism in Tanzania

The Tanzanian tourist industry is less well developed than the tourist industry in its neighbour Kenya. This is partly a result of past government policies. The Tanzanian state had a major shareholding in the tourist industry, and foreign companies were reluctant to invest in the country. In 1990, the government began to liberalize the tourist sector, which revitalised the tourist industry. The government created the Tanzanian Tourist Board in 1992. The tourist industry currently supports 27,000 jobs and generates 25% of Tanzania's foreign exchange. The country had more than 330,000 visitors in the mid 1990s.cite book |title=Worldwide Destinations: The Geography of Travel and Tourism |last=Boniface |first=Brain G. |coauthors=Christopher P. Tourist attractions

Tanzania's most well known tourist attractions are close to its border with Kenya and include Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. Serengeti National Park is world famous and has spectacular seasonal migrations of animals. The Ngorongoro Reserve is an extinct volcanic caldera with excellent game viewing from the crater rim. The reserve has large herds of wildebeest and zebra, and lions and the endangered black rhinoceros. Game fishing and diving are the main attractions in these islands.
