Žitkovac ( Serbian: Житковац) is a locality in Serbia situated in the municipality of Aleksinac, in the Nišava District. Žitkovac has a population of 2.680 as recorded in the 2002 census.
Etymology: “Zitkovac” in the Serbian means “the land of the wheat”.

Location

Zitkovac is located in the Aleksinac valley surrounded by mountains Jastrebac (attitude 1492 m, “mountain of the Hawk”) and Ozren (attitude 1178m.) The river flows through the valley is South Morava.The nearest town is Aleksinac (3 km), which is the centre of community having the same name, located in the Nišava District of Serbia.
Zitkovac is geographically united with two other localities Moravac and Prcilovica creating one of the most populated locality of the municipality of Aleksinac, with approximately 7 000 citizens.Thanks to it’s location, Zitkovac has became economical and cultural center of the Aleksinac municipality on the left side of the South Morava river. It is connected with other Serbian cities by railways and highway Belgrade – Niš

History

Early period

Many archaeological discoveries from middle neolith (between 5300 and 4500 B.J.C)in Zitkovac and it’s neighbour- village Moravac, are evidence that they were inhabited since then.According to Tihomir Djordjevic, end of the 19 th century Serbian ethnologist and historian, who was exploring the history of the Aleksinac valley, all villages of the actual municipality of Aleksinac located on the left side of the South Morava river, had been inhabited places since middle neolith. Most of its settlements belong to the Starčevo cultural group.
In the 1985 in Zitkovac were found several urns, which are today in the homeland museum in Aleksinac. In 1994, the archeologists discovered necropolis aria of 80 ha.Nearly of discovered necropolis, in 2002 in village Moravac were found lot of Neolithic ceramics and object of bronze. Neolithic ceramics traces are across the whole village. The stone Neolithic founded in part of village Moravac called “Konjarnik” is displayed in the homeland museum in Aleksinac.
