- Thibaud of Ostia
Thibaud of Ostia (died
November 4 ,1188 ) - was a French cardinal. His name is listed also as Théobald or Teobaldo. He entered the Order of
Benedictines of theCongregation of Cluny in his youth. He was prior of the monastery of SS. Crispino and Crispiniano atSoissons and then abbot of the monastery of Saint Basil atReims [G. Moroni, p. 17.] . He was alsoabbot of Cluny 1179-1183 [This is according to G. Moroni, p. 17;François Du Chesne (1616-1693). [http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k914067/f183.table Histoire de tous les cardinaux françois de naissance : ou qui ont esté] , p. 160-162 and [http://www.uni-muenster.de/Fruehmittelalter/Projekte/Cluny/abbates_cluny.htm the catalog of the abbots of Cluny on the website of the University of Mūnster] , where he is listed as Thiebaud de Vermandois. Some other catalogs (f.e [http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_abb%C3%A9s_de_Cluny this catalog] ) question the identity of Thibaud de Vermandois with Thibaud of Ostia, indicating that Thibaud de Vermandois remained abbot of Cluny until 1199, but from the papal bulls included in the [http://www.uni-muenster.de/Fruehmittelalter/Projekte/Cluny/Bullarium/Welcome.htm Bullarium Cluniacense on the website of the University of Mūnster] , p. 80-86 appears that no later than in the pontificate ofUrban III (1185-87) the abbot of Cluny was named Hugo, not Thibaud] .Pope Lucius III elevated him to the cardinalate ca. 1183 and named himCardinal-Bishop of Ostia e Velletri [G. Moroni indicates that he was created cardinal-priest of S. Croce in Gerusalemme byPope Alexander III ca. 1170, while Lucius III only promoted him to the higher rank of cardinal-bishop of Ostia, but it seems to be incorrect, because he did not subscribe any papal bulls in the pontificate of Alexander III or at the beginning of the pontificate of Lucius III (Jaffé Philipp, "Regesta...", p. 677-678 and 834-835). Moreover, the title of S. Croce in Gerusalemme during this time was occupied byArdoino da Piacenza (1178-ca.1182/83), who countersigned the papal bulls as titular of this church betweenOctober 1 ,1178 andDecember 23 ,1182 (Jaffé Philipp, "Regesta...", p. 678 and 835). Thibaud signed a papal bull for the first time onJune 17 ,1184 and he was Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia e Velletri at that time (Jaffé Philipp, "Regesta...", p. 834). Moroni, p. 17, says that during his legation in Germany he solemnly consecrated the Cistercian church of the Holy Cross in Austria. Possibly this fact is an origin of an error of considering him "Cardinal of S. Croce" (Holy Cross = Santa Croce).François Du Chesne (1616-1693). [http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k914067/f183.table Histoire de tous les cardinaux françois de naissance : ou qui ont esté] , p. 162 says that he was created Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia by Lucius III atVerona but he gives no date for this event.] ; as such, he signed the papal bulls betweenJune 17 ,1184 andOctober 28 , 1188 [Jaffé Philipp, "Regesta...", p. 834, 854, 866 and 869] . He served as papal legate in Germany. He participated in the papal election of 1185, of October 1187 and of December 1187; in the last one, he was elected to the papacy but declined in favour of Paolo Scolari, who was electedPope Clement III [A. Piazzoni, p. 175] . He died atRome and was buried in the Basilica of S. Paolo fuori le mura [G. Moroni, p. 17] .References
