Yokohama International School

Yokohama International School

Yokohama International School (YIS) is one of the oldest international schools in the world. It is located in the heart of the old foreign residential section of Yokohama, Japan, commonly known as the Bluff. Founded in 1924 by a group of foreign residents, YIS was the second school in the world to use the word 'international' in its title. Over 40 nationalities are represented at the school and approximately 12 nationalities on the teaching staff. The staff:student ratio, excluding part-time teachers and classroom assistants, does not exceed 1:10.

YIS is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and offers courses leading to International General Certificate of Secondary Education and International Baccalaureate qualifications. The school also offers support for US College Board SAT. The language of instruction is English though Japanese, French, Spanish and Chinese are also taught.

The strong academic programme, as well as the co/extra curricular programme is rich in variety. College counselling and other students support services are provided.

YIS is very much a community school. Although it continues to grow year on year, YIS maintains its caring and nurturing priorities. The lasting memory of YIS is of a warm and welcoming school. The students are particularly supportive of one another and anti-social behaviour is extremely rare. All this makes for a great working and learning environment.

According to the "Good Schools Guide International", "There is a lot of idealism here and the courage to try new approaches when the old ones don’t seem good enough."
