There are derivatives to this Family name across the former extent of the Roman Empire. Examples include: Pecoraio (Italy), Păcurar, Pacurar and Pecurar (Romania), as well as, its Germanized and Slavicized form: Pekurar (Romania and former Yugoslavia).

There is a possibilty this name was also derived from a locality, that of Pecorara, in the Province of Piacenza, Italy.
