Michael Keaton plays the title character, a man who is actually named Jack Frost. He runs a band, and thus is forced to miss many events in his son's life, but promises to be home for Christmas Eve. His band is scheduled for an audition that day, but mid-way along the trip they change their minds to be with their respective families. Jack tries to race home to make it in time. However, on his way back, he gets in a car crash and dies.
A year later, Jack returns as his son Charlie's snowman, and decides to make up for all the times he missed with his son. In the end, Jack is forced to flee with his son to a cabin to stay cold, and thus alive. His wife arrives, and realizes that her husband has returned. Dawn and Christmas Day arrive, and Jack becomes human once more to say goodbye before returning to the afterlife.
