website = [http://www.cer.org.uk, www.cer.org.uk]The Centre for European Reform is a London-based
think-tank devoted to improving the quality of the debate on theEuropean Union . It is a forum for people with ideas from Britain and across the continent to discuss the many political, economic and social challenges facing Europe. It seeks to work with similar bodies in other European countries, North America and elsewhere in the world. The CER is pro-European but not uncritical. It regards European integration as largely beneficial but recognises that in many respects the Union does not work well. The CER therefore aims to promote new ideas for reforming the European Union.The centre was founded in 1996 by Charles Grant, former defence editor of "
The Economist " magazine. The CER's work is funded by donations from the private sector. It has never received core funding from governments or EU institutions.The centre's current chairman is
Nick Butler , formerly ofBP , the world's third largest globalenergy company . The CER's advisory board includes two former British ambassadors Lord Hannay and Lord Kerr as well as three past or present European Commissioners, Lord Dahrendorf,António Vitorino andPascal Lamy . Lord Robertson, former head ofNATO , is also a board member."The Centre for European Reform, by far the best of all EU think-tanks in London"
The Guardian "A think-tank that manages to be both Atlanticist and Europhile"
The Economist "A think-tank with an increasingly influential role in the shaping of official policy"
