It was designed by noted Los Angeles architect, Elmer Gray in a mixed Beaux Arts - Italianate - Spanish Romanesque style. It is a contributing property in the Alvarado Terrace Historic District which was added on May 17 1984, to the National Register of Historic Places.[cite web|url=http://www.nr.nps.gov/|title=National Register Information System|date=2007-01-23|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service] ]First Church of Christ, Scientist, was sold in 1972 and was used as a synagogue for a time before becoming the Los Angeles branch of the ill-fated Disciples of Christ church known as the Peoples Temple led by the Rev. Jim Jones. It is now a Spanish-speaking Seventh Day Adventist church called Iglesia Adventista Central.
