Bess Holland

Bess Holland was the mistress of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and maid-of-honour to his niece, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII of England. For eight years she worked as a laundress in the household of Norfolk's wife, Elizabeth Howard, Duchess of Norfolk. The fall of Norfolk

Despite their relationship lasting for approximately fifteen years, when the Duke and his son, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, were arrested, Bess gave information that helped seal their fates. Surrey was the 'last victim of Henry VIII', being executed on the eve of the King's own death. Norfolk's execution was planned for later and this was suspended. He was kept in the Tower throughout Edward VI's minority, and was released in 1553, during the reign of Mary I, whose Catholic beliefs were similar to his.

In 1547, after the Duke had been arrested, she married Henry Reppes and died after childbirth.
