Kevin Montgomery (musician)

Kevin Montgomery (born June 21st, 1968) is an American singer, songwriter.

Kevin Montgomery was born in Nashville, Tennessee to parents Bob Montgomery, who was a songwriting partner and best friend of Buddy Holly, performing together as the duo "Buddy and Bob" while teenagers in high school, and Carol Montgomery, who was a session singer for stars including Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.

Kevin Montgomery's recording career began with his debut album "Fear Nothing" on A&M Records in 1993. He toured the US with acts including Sheryl Crowe and David Crosby and featured on a duet with Mary Chapin-Carpenter on the 1996 Buddy Holly Tribute album "Not Fade Away" singing his father's composition "Wishing", his father also co-producing the track.

Building his profile as a songwriter, Kevin's track "I Won't Close My Eyes" was cut by Martina McBride on her double platinum selling "Evolution" CD in 1997. Later, Juice Newton took Kevin's song "Red Blooded American Boy" (changing the gender reference to 'girl') for her 1999 release, "American Girl". Kevin also sang backing vocals on Lee Ann Womack's "I Know Why The River Runs" for her platinum selling album, "I Hope You Dance" in 2000.

2000 was also the year which saw Kevin release "Another Long Story" on his own independent label Road Trip Records with production credits including Frank Liddell and Dusty Wakeman and musicians including Matt Rollings and Doug Pettibone. The video for the track "Let's All Go To California" was featured on the BBC TV programme TOTP2 and many worldwide radio stations and video channels, as was the title track.

2001 saw the release of "Kevin Montgomery Live" recorded at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, an acoustic live album featuring Robert Reynolds from The Mavericks and Trish Murphy on harmonies.

Touring in the UK extensively, with both a full band line-up (including musicians Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin and Mike McAdam), and also acoustically with another band member, Grammy Award winner Al Perkins, led to the release of the "Bootleg" album in 2002, recorded live from London's 12 Bar Club the previous year.

Building on the success of his touring, by now worldwide, 2003 brought the third studio album "2:30am" which featured both Lee Ann Womack and Trisha Yearwood on harmony vocals and included Montgomery's touring band with added musicians Chad Cromwell, Glenn Worf, Bob Britt, Matt Rollings, Chris Carmichael, Jerry Dale Mcfadden. The opening track "Tennessee Girl" was featured on BBC TV's coverage of the CMA Awards show and the video for the song was shown on channels such as GAC in the US and CMC in Australia.

Still touring successfully to larger audiences each year, 2005 saw the release of "Live From Glasgow!", the CD that captured the essence of the live full band show sound in Glasgow's famous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, with the Road Trippers including Johnny Mackinnon on keyboard.

"True" is the newest album release, featuring Paul Griffith on drums, Shawn Byrne on guitar (writer of the title track) and Danny White on bass. Recorded in White's 16 Ton recording studios on Music Row in Nashville, the album showed a new departure with the extensive use of strings, expertly scored and performed by Chris Carmichael (fans will be familiar with his work on "Cherokee City" on the "2:30am" album from 2003). "True" follows the typical Montgomery mix of rockers and sensitive, heart-rending ballads, undoubtedley the most poignant of these is "Nothing", dedicated to the memory of Kevin's daughter.

On his latest album Montgomery Jnr. pays tribute to his notable musical heritage with a vintage sound on his cover of "Back In Baby's Arms", which was a hit for Patsy Cline, and written by his father Bob Montgomery.
