His widow, Ann, a registered nurse donated money to the Cancer Center at Northwestern University which now bears the Lurie name. Ann Lurie also commited $100 million to the new Children's Memorial Hospital.

Robert H. Lurie graduated from University of Michigan (BSE IOE '64, MSE '66) where the Lurie Tower stands. Robert H. Lurie Engineering Center at University of Michigan. Robert made his fortune investing with Sam Zell in real estate.
