KTRE is the call sign of a television station in Lufkin, Texas, USA. It is an ABC network affiliate on VHF channel 9.

History

KTRE signed on August 31, 1955 by the owners of KTRE AM 1420 (now defunct), as a satellite station of Houston NBC affiliate KPRC-TV. Due to the lack of signals reaching Lufkin, KTRE sometimes aired a mix of network shows in the early years. In 1964 the Buford family bought the station and it became a satellite of KLTV, which is Tyler's ABC affiliate, but also aired programs from CBS and NBC. But the mid 1980s, both stations were primarily ABC stations. KTRE has changed ownership several times but has always been a (semi) satellite to KLTV.

KTRE operated at 26 kilowatts visual power at 540' for many years. In the early 80's the station installed a new antenna and transmitter to increase power to 131 kilowatts. The new system was directionalized to minimize overlap with KLTV, to comply with the duopoly rules.

KTRE's first news anchorman was Murphy Martin, who later became a local television newsman in Dallas and anchorman for ABC News.

It is owned by Raycom Media and is a sister station to Tyler's KLTV. When it was purchased by Liberty Corporation, KLTV started producing a morning and midday program to air on both stations. KTRE maintains a full news department with 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts.

KTRE airs programs in HDTV on digital channel 11.

Coverage

KTRE is available on Suddenlink Communications, Consolidated Communications and Communicomm in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area. Because this region is part of the Tyler/Longview television market, KTRE is not broadcast on Dish Network or DirecTV. KLTV, KTRE's sister station in Tyler, is available on all satellite systems.
