- Michael Nering
Michael Nering (born 1968) is the Director of Psychometrics at Measured Progress, Inc. He is best known for his research in Item Response Theory, especially in the areas of person fit and computer-adaptive testing.
Nering's 1995 article "The Distribution of Person Fit Using True and Estimated Person Parameters" demonstrated that when examinee ability is estimated, a person fit statistic's small-sample distribution may be inadequately approximated by its asymptotic distribution. Nering, M.L. (1995). The distribution of person fit using true and estimated person parameters. Applied Psychological Measurement, 19, 121-129.] A second paper, co-authored with Rob R. Meijer, compared two of the most widely used person fit statistics in the psychometric literature. Nering, M.L., & Meijer, R.R. (1998). A comparison of the person response function and the l_z person-fit statistic. Applied Psychological Measurement, 22, 53-69.]
Nering is also a co-author of a book on polytomous Item Response Theory models. Ostini, R., & Nering, M.L. (2005). Polytomous item response theory models. Newbury Park, CA: Sage.] His work in computer-adaptive testing began at the University of Minnesota with David Weiss, a noted expert in the field.
